Brand History
The BMW M Story
BMW M began in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH, a subsidiary created to run the company's racing programmes under first managing director Jochen Neerpasch. It moved into road cars with the mid-engined M1 of 1978, followed by the M5 and the M3, which became one of the most successful touring car racers ever and defined the modern sports sedan. The division's tricolour stripes became one of the most recognisable performance emblems in the industry.
