Origins

The 6/99 of 1959 applied the Farina treatment to BMC's large saloons, giving Wolseley a flagship that shared its body with the Austin A99 while dressing it in the marque's full regalia: illuminated grille badge, burr walnut, deep leather seats. The 2.9-litre C-series six drove through an unusual three-speed gearbox with overdrive on the upper ratios, and servo-assisted brakes acknowledged the car's near-ton-and-a-half of respectability. This was transport for the professional classes — solicitors, senior police officers, the occasional government pool — offering most of a Vanden Plas Princess's ambience for usefully less money. The improved 6/110 followed in 1961 and lasted until 1968. It was the last really large Wolseley, and the marque's dignity never sat better than on these unhurried, clubroom-quiet cars.
