Brand History

The Autocar Story

Autocar, founded in 1897 by Louis Semple Clarke in Pennsylvania, holds one of the oldest surviving vehicle nameplates in the United States and pioneered features such as shaft drive in early American cars. It shifted entirely to trucks in the early 20th century and built a reputation for heavy-duty, severe-service vehicles, later passing through White Motor Company and Volvo ownership before being acquired by GVW Group in 2001.
