Brand History

The Datsun Story

Datsun originated in Japan in 1931, its name evolving from the earlier DAT car ('Datson' was changed because 'son' sounds like the Japanese word for loss). Nissan used Datsun as its main export brand for decades, building its American reputation with affordable models like the 510 and the 240Z sports car. Nissan retired the name in 1986 in favor of its own, then revived Datsun in 2013 as a budget brand for emerging markets before discontinuing it again in 2022.
