Brand History

The Hispano-Suiza Story

Hispano-Suiza was founded in Barcelona in 1904, uniting Spanish capital led by Damián Mateu with the engineering genius of Swiss designer Marc Birkigt. The company built some of the finest luxury cars of the pre-war era, notably the H6 of 1919, and was equally celebrated for its V8 aero engines that powered Allied fighters in the First World War. Car production faded in the late 1930s as the firm concentrated on aviation, and the marque was revived decades later by descendants of the founding Mateu family with the Carmen electric hypercar unveiled in 2019.

Hispano-Suiza's badge pairs the Spanish and Swiss flag colours with the famous flying stork mascot. The stork honours French air ace Georges Guynemer, whose squadron flew Hispano-Suiza-powered fighters in the First World War and carried a stork as its emblem; it was adopted on road cars in the era of the H6.
