Brand History

The Horch Story

Horch was established by pioneering German engineer August Horch, whose company settled in Zwickau in 1904 after earlier beginnings in Cologne. After a boardroom dispute forced Horch out of his own firm in 1909, he founded a rival company named Audi, the Latin translation of his surname. Horch went on to build some of Germany's most prestigious luxury cars of the 1920s and 1930s, and in 1932 it became one of the four rings of the newly formed Auto Union. Production ended with the Second World War, after which the Zwickau works ended up in East Germany.

Horch is defunct as an independent marque, though Audi has revived the name as a top-of-the-range trim level for the A8 in China, honouring its founder.
