Brand History
The Hummer Story
Hummer began in 1992 when AM General offered a civilian version of its military Humvee, a vehicle popularised by Gulf War coverage and enthusiasts including Arnold Schwarzenegger. General Motors acquired the brand rights in 1999 and expanded the range with the H2 and H3 SUVs, which became symbols of 2000s excess before sales collapsed amid rising fuel prices. GM shut the brand down in 2010 during its restructuring, then revived Hummer in 2020 as an all-electric sub-brand of GMC.
