Brand History
The Indian Motorcycle Story
Indian Motorcycle was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1901 by George Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom, making it America's oldest motorcycle brand. Models such as the Scout and Chief made Indian a dominant force in early American motorcycling and board-track racing, and its rivalry with Harley-Davidson defined the industry. The original company collapsed in 1953, and after decades of failed revivals the brand was acquired by Polaris Industries in 2011, which relaunched Indian with all-new machines in 2013.

Indian has long used a flowing script wordmark, and imagery of a Native American war bonnet has been associated with the brand since its early decades, most famously as the illuminated fender ornament on the Chief. The modern Polaris-era identity retains the classic script alongside a headdress emblem.
