Brand History

The Ligier Story

Ligier was founded in 1968 by former rugby player and racing driver Guy Ligier, whose JS model designations honoured his late friend Jo Schlesser. The firm built the JS2 sports car before running a famous Formula 1 team from 1976 to 1996, winning grands prix including Monaco in 1996. In parallel Ligier became one of Europe's leading makers of licence-free microcars, a business that eventually became its core.
