Brand History

The Michelin Story

The Michelin brothers founded their rubber company in Clermont-Ferrand in 1889 and patented the first removable pneumatic tyre for bicycles in 1891, then for cars in 1895. Michelin invented the radial tyre in 1946, a design that became the industry standard, and its mascot Bibendum — the Michelin Man, made of stacked tyres — has advertised the brand since 1898. The company also publishes the Michelin Guide, whose restaurant stars began as a way to encourage motoring.

Current Lineup

Michelin is one of the world's two largest tyre makers, supplying road, motorsport, aviation and industrial tyres, and is the sole tyre supplier to MotoGP and to Formula E's early seasons.

Sales

Approximately €28 billion in revenue (2023).
