Brand History
The Rivian Story
Rivian was founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe and pivoted from sports car plans to electric adventure vehicles, unveiling the R1T pickup and R1S SUV in 2018. Backed by major investments from Amazon and Ford, it began production in 2021 at a former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois, and its IPO that year was one of the largest in U.S. history. Rivian also builds electric delivery vans for Amazon and announced a major software joint venture with Volkswagen Group in 2024.
