Origins

Launched in 1951 as the New Austin Seven, borrowing the reputation of a car that had been out of production for over a decade, the A30 was more significant than its modest specification suggests, for two reasons.

Design and engineering

The first is structural: it was Austin's first car with a unitary body, dispensing with the separate chassis that had underpinned everything before it. The second is under the bonnet. The A30 introduced the A-series engine, an 803 cc overhead-valve four designed for a small cheap saloon, which in enlarged forms went on to power the Mini, the 1100, the Sprite and Midget, the Metro and a long list of others, staying in production for close to half a century. Few engines have earned their development costs so thoroughly.

In production

A four-door came first, a two-door followed in 1953, and estate and van versions covered the rest. The A35 replaced it in 1956 with a 948 cc engine and a larger rear window, and from 1959 the Mini took over the bottom of the range.
