Origins

General Motors was close to bankruptcy while the fifth-generation Corvette was being developed, and the programme survived on a skeleton budget and the persistence of the engineering team. What emerged in 1997 was the most thorough re-engineering the car had ever received.

Design and engineering

The frame used hydroformed steel side rails — single continuous pieces replacing dozens of welded stampings — which made the structure far stiffer and simplified assembly. The gearbox moved to the rear axle as a transaxle, connected to the engine by a torque tube, giving near-equal weight distribution and, at last, a genuinely usable cabin with a proper boot. The new LS1 aluminium V8 was lighter and more powerful than the LT1 it replaced, and became the basis for GM's V8s for the next two decades.

In production

John Cafaro's body was smoother and less angular than the C4's, and the driving experience was transformed: the car was quicker, quieter, more comfortable and considerably faster around a circuit. A fixed-roof hardtop arrived in 1999 as the stiffest and lightest version, and it became the basis of the Z06 in 2001, powered by the higher-output LS6.

Legacy

The C5 also took the Corvette back to serious racing. The factory-supported C5-R won its class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2001 and 2002 and dominated American endurance racing, establishing a works Corvette programme that has run more or less continuously ever since.
