The Chevrolet Corvette Story

The Chevrolet Corvette debuted in 1953 as a fiberglass-bodied roadster and became America's longest-running sports car nameplate. Early V8 power and the leadership of engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov transformed it from a boulevard cruiser into a genuine performance machine, with the Sting Ray of the 1960s cementing its icon status. Across eight generations the Corvette has served as General Motors' technological flagship, culminating in the switch to a mid-engine layout with the C8 generation in 2020.

1. 1953–2019

   The Corvette has used a crossed-flags emblem since 1953: a checkered racing flag paired with a flag bearing the Chevrolet bowtie and a fleur-de-lis. An early prototype badge featured the American flag, but it was replaced before production because commercial use of the national flag was prohibited. The emblem was redrawn for each generation while keeping the same crossed-flags theme.

2. 2019–present

   For the mid-engine C8, the crossed flags were modernized with sharper, more angular geometry and a flatter, more technical rendering.
