Origins

Denza began as a Mercedes-Benz and BYD joint venture that never quite found its market. BYD took majority control, put Wolfgang Egger's design team in charge and relaunched the brand in 2022 with the D9 — a large minivan, a body style that in China means executive transport rather than school runs.

Design and engineering

It was offered as a plug-in hybrid, the DM-i, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with electric drive through an E-CVT in front- or all-wheel-drive form, and as a fully electric model. The interior was the sales pitch: reclining captain's chairs with massage and ventilation, screens for every row, and a level of finish aimed directly at the Toyota Alphard imports that had dominated the segment.

In production

It worked. The D9 became one of China's best-selling MPVs almost immediately and pulled the segment's price expectations upwards, and it has since been exported across Southeast Asia. Production runs at plants in Xi'an, Shenzhen and Changsha.
