01

Origins

The N7 was Denza's attempt to move beyond the MPV that had rescued the brand: a mid-size electric crossover launched in June 2023, built on BYD's e-platform 3.0 with rear-motor or dual-motor drive, a single-speed reduction gearbox, and a design led by Wolfgang Egger that traded the usual SUV squareness for a low, tapering roofline.

Design and engineering

It arrived well equipped, with air suspension and advanced driver assistance in higher trims, into the most crowded and most price-sensitive segment in the Chinese market. Sales never matched the D9's, and production is scheduled to end in 2026 — a reminder that in China's electric market, competent is not the same as competitive.

In production

Part of the difficulty was internal. BYD's own Han and Tang models covered similar ground at lower prices, and Denza's brand equity had been built almost entirely on the D9, leaving the N7 to argue for a premium that buyers could not see from the outside. Assembly ran at Jinan in Shandong.
