Henrik Fisker's second company was built on a deliberate strategy: own the design and the customer relationship, and let someone else own the factory. The Ocean was engineered and assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, a contract manufacturer with a long record of building other people's cars, which allowed Fisker Inc to reach production in 2022 without the capital cost of a plant.

The vehicle itself had real ideas. A SolarSky roof of photovoltaic panels was offered, claimed to add a useful amount of range over a year in sunny climates. California Mode dropped every window including the rear glass at one touch. Top versions used two motors for all-wheel drive; the entry Sport was front-driven. Interior materials made a point of recycled content.

What sank it was everything around the car. The software was unfinished at launch, with owners reporting failures that required repeated over-the-air updates and, at times, physical intervention. Fisker had chosen a direct-sales model without the service network to support it, then reversed course to dealers midway through. Deliveries ran far behind the vehicles being built, cash ran out faster than either, and internal controls over which cars had actually been paid for proved inadequate.

Fisker Inc filed for bankruptcy in June 2024, having built the Ocean for barely two years. Remaining inventory was sold off at heavy discounts, and owners were left with vehicles whose software support was suddenly in question — a modern failure mode that the industry is still working out how to handle.
