Origins

The Storm of 1990 gave the Geo brand its dash of style: an Isuzu Impulse in more affordable trim, built in Japan and sold through Chevrolet showrooms as a budget sports coupé. The wedge-and-glass styling looked more expensive than it was, the 1.6-litre twin-cam GSi version was genuinely eager, and handling benefited from suspension work carrying Lotus's fingerprints from Isuzu's programme — a fact its marketing enjoyed enormously. It sold well at first to young buyers priced out of established coupés, then faded as the segment itself began collapsing; production ended in 1993 when Isuzu withdrew from passenger cars entirely. The Storm has become a minor cult object since — the sort of disposable, likeable machine almost nobody preserved, which is exactly why survivors now draw a crowd at any radwood-era gathering.
