Origins
Hycan — born a GAC-Nio joint venture, progressively GAC-controlled as Nio's attention returned home — launched the A06 in 2022 as its mainstream play: a large electric fastback saloon at aggressive prices, chasing the family-EV heart of the market with specification-per-yuan as the argument. The brand's hybrid parentage promised startup dynamism with SOE manufacturing; the market delivered its era's verdict through volume that stayed stubbornly modest against entrenched rivals. The A06 typifies the joint-venture EV brands' predicament — credible products without distinct identity, squeezed between the startups' cachet and the majors' scale — a squeeze that would eventually claim Hycan's independence. Two parents, the sector learned, can leave a brand with no inheritance at all.
