Origins

Livan — the joint venture through which Geely absorbed bankrupt Lifan's automotive assets — launched the 7 in 2023: an electric crossover-coupé built on Geely architecture with battery-swap capability, aimed at the fleet and ride-hailing ecosystems where swapping's minutes-not-hours logic worked commercially. The venture's purpose was infrastructure as much as product: Lifan's licences and Chongqing base serving Geely's swap-network ambitions alongside taxi-focused siblings. Private retail remained secondary. The Livan 7 thus represents Chinese industrial recycling at its most efficient — a dead motorcycle empire's carcass, reanimated as a battery-logistics play by the industry's most acquisitive survivor. Whether the swap network scales will decide if the resurrection meant anything. The Chongqing plants, at least, kept their shifts — which in this consolidation counted as success.
