Origins
The Arabella of 1959 was Lloyd's graduation piece: a genuinely modern small car with a new 897cc flat-four, front-wheel drive, and contemporary full-width styling — engineering that anticipated the European small-car mainstream by years. Development haste showed in early water leaks and gearbox frailties that the press amplified, and the car's costs strained a Borgward group already financially fevered; the parent's spectacular 1961 collapse — still debated as Germany's great avoidable insolvency — ended production with around 47,000 built, some late cars badged as Borgward Arabellas. The model deserved a longer life: its layout and packaging read as a sketch of the next two decades' conventional wisdom. Instead the Arabella became a collector's poignancy — the future, cancelled by cash flow.
