Origins

Postwar Italy needed to move goods as urgently as it needed to move people, and the same shortage of money applied. Piaggio's answer in 1948 was to take the Vespa that Corradino D'Ascanio had designed two years earlier, add a second rear wheel and a load bed, and sell it as a light commercial vehicle. Following the naming logic already established, the wasp was joined by the bee: Ape.

Design and engineering

It is barely a vehicle by modern standards, a submicrovan with a small single-cylinder engine, handlebar steering and a cab that a tall driver wears rather than sits in. That is the point. It is narrow enough for medieval street plans, cheap enough for a market trader, and simple enough to be repaired by anyone with basic tools. Bodywork variants have covered van, pickup and passenger-carrying autorickshaw duty.

In production

Production has continued from 1948 to the present at Pontedera in Italy and at Pune in India, where the autorickshaw versions are built in far larger numbers than anything sold in Europe. Few designs have stayed useful for so long by being so deliberately small.
