Origins
When Sergio Pininfarina died in 2012, the house answered with design: the Sergio concept of 2013, a radical open barchetta on Ferrari 458 Spider mechanicals whose floating headrests and knife-edged surfaces argued the carrozzeria's relevance in an era of manufacturer in-house studios. Ferrari sanctioned a production homage — six cars, built on 458 running gear with the concept's drama pragmatically tamed, sold pre-allocated to collectors at around three million dollars each. The Sergio thus served double duty: memorial to the man who had steered the Ferrari relationship through its golden decades, and demonstration that Pininfarina's name alone could still command hypercar economics. It was the last pure Ferrari-Pininfarina statement before the partnership's quiet sunset — grief, expressed at 320 km/h.
