Origins
The SM3 of 2002 extended Renault Samsung's range downward: a compact saloon on Nissan underpinnings offering the marque's polished-conservative formula — Japanese-derived reliability, Korean equipment generosity — to first-car buyers and fleets. It sold steadily at home and, badged variously as Nissan Almera Classic and Renault Scala abroad, gave the Busan plant export volume across emerging markets. Later generations aligned with the Renault-Nissan Mégane-family architecture, and an early SM3 Z.E. electric variant made the model an unlikely EV pioneer in Korean taxi fleets. The SM3's career traces the alliance's plumbing — one Korean factory feeding many badges — and the quiet competence that kept Renault's Asian outpost viable between headline products. Few cars have worn so many badges so quietly, or served an alliance's logistics so obligingly.
