Origins
The Crown Majesta of 1991 gave Japan's establishment saloon a bubble-era summit: a wider, plusher Crown with its own hardtop body, Toyota's new 4-litre V8 shared with the Celsior, and air suspension — a domestic flagship slotted above the standard Crown and below the chauffeur-class Century, for executives who found a Celsior too international. Successive generations refined the formula through 2018, latterly hybrid, always Japan-only and always slightly invisible outside it. The Majesta matters as taxonomy: proof of how finely Japan's hierarchy of dignity was graded, with Toyota supplying a distinct car for each rung. When the Crown line globalised and simplified, the Majesta retired — the rung it occupied having quietly ceased to exist.
