Brand History
The Daihatsu Story
Daihatsu traces its roots to Hatsudoki Seizo, an engine maker founded in Osaka in 1907, adopting the Daihatsu name in 1951. It became a specialist in Japan's kei-car segment with models such as the Mira and the Copen roadster, and built a strong position in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, where it underpins Perodua models. Toyota took a controlling stake in 1998 and made Daihatsu a wholly owned subsidiary in 2016; in 2023 the company was engulfed in a safety-test certification scandal that temporarily halted production.
