Brand History

The Ferrari Story

Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari in Modena in 1929 as an independent racing team that competed with Alfa Romeo cars. After leaving Alfa Romeo in 1939, he established Auto Avio Costruzioni because an agreement temporarily prevented him from using the Ferrari name on cars; its 815 raced in 1940. Ferrari's official carmaking history begins on March 12, 1947, when Enzo started the 125 S, the first car to bear his name, in Maranello. Ferrari later became Formula 1's most successful constructor. Fiat acquired 50% of the company in 1969; Ferrari listed shares in 2015 and completed its separation from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on January 3, 2016.

  1. 1923–1931 (origin)

After Enzo Ferrari met the parents of First World War flying ace Francesco Baracca in 1923, Baracca's mother suggested that he use her son's black prancing horse for good luck. Ferrari added the yellow background to represent Modena.

  2. 1932–1946 (Scuderia Ferrari)

The Prancing Horse first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari machinery in July 1932. Its yellow shield carried the Italian colors and the initials 'S F'.

  3. 1947–present (Ferrari cars)

The first Ferrari car, the 125 S, carried a badge refined with engraver Eligio Gerosa. Ferrari road cars use the rectangular badge with the marque name, while Scuderia and competition applications retain the shield.
