Origins

The SF90 is named for the ninetieth anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari, and it was the first plug-in hybrid Ferrari sold as a series production model rather than a limited-run flagship. That distinction matters: the technology introduced on LaFerrari as an exercise had become, within six years, the specification of a car anyone with the money could order.

Design and engineering

The layout is the interesting part. A 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, mid-mounted longitudinally, drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, assisted by an electric motor between engine and transmission. Two further electric motors sit on the front axle, one per wheel, with no mechanical connection to the engine at all. This gives the car all-wheel drive, torque vectoring at the front, and a short electric-only range for town use, without a propshaft.

In production

Ferrari's styling centre under Flavio Manzoni gave it a lower, wider cabin than the F8 below it and a rear deck dominated by the engine and its cooling. Inside, the switchgear moved almost entirely onto the steering wheel and a curved digital display, an interface that has divided owners since.

Legacy

A Spider with a retractable hardtop followed, and later the harder-edged XX Stradale and XX Spider, sold in defined numbers for buyers who wanted the track-focused version. Production ran to 2024 for the standard cars, with the XX models continuing after. It is the car that established the hybrid V8 as Ferrari's mainstream flagship rather than its exception.
