Brand History

The Gurgel Story

Gurgel was founded in 1969 by Brazilian engineer João Augusto Conrado do Amaral Gurgel and became Brazil's best-known independent carmaker. It specialised in fibreglass-bodied vehicles, initially using Volkswagen mechanicals, and built rugged off-roaders such as the X-12 as well as urban electric prototypes. In the late 1980s it launched the BR-800, a small car promoted as a largely Brazilian-developed design, but financial difficulties led to the company's collapse in the mid-1990s.
