Brand History

The Hindustan Motors Story

Hindustan Motors was founded in 1942 by industrialist B.M. Birla and became one of India's pioneering carmakers, building vehicles at its Uttarpara plant near Calcutta. Its defining product was the Ambassador, based on the Morris Oxford Series III, which entered production in the late 1950s and served for decades as India's archetypal government car and taxi. Production of the Ambassador continued with only gradual changes until 2014, when the plant suspended operations.

Current Lineup

Hindustan Motors no longer builds passenger cars; Ambassador production ended in 2014 and rights to the name were later sold to Peugeot.
