Brand History
The Hino Story
Hino Motors was established in 1942 in the Tokyo suburb of Hino as a maker of heavy vehicles, with roots in earlier Japanese diesel and gas engine enterprises. It became Japan's leading heavy-duty truck and bus manufacturer, and also built passenger cars such as the Contessa in the 1960s and assembled Renaults under licence before focusing entirely on commercial vehicles. Hino entered Toyota's orbit in the 1960s and became a consolidated Toyota subsidiary; in 2022 it was engulfed in a scandal over falsified engine emissions and fuel economy data.

Current Lineup
Hino continues to build trucks and buses worldwide as part of the Toyota group, and has agreed to combine with Mitsubishi Fuso under a joint holding structure backed by Toyota and Daimler Truck.
