Brand History
The Proton Story
Proton was established in 1983 as Malaysia's national car company, a project championed by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and launched its first car, the Mitsubishi-based Saga, in 1985. It dominated the protected Malaysian market for years and acquired Lotus in 1996, gaining engineering expertise. Rising competition eroded its position until China's Geely bought a 49.9 percent stake in 2017, bringing new platforms and investment.
