Proton was created in 1983 as a state project under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, whose government wanted a domestic car industry as the anchor of a broader push into heavy manufacturing. Mitsubishi provided the technology and the tooling, and the first car came off the line at Shah Alam in 1985.

The Saga was a rebodied Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore, a conventional front-wheel-drive saloon with a small four-cylinder engine and nothing unusual about it whatsoever. That was appropriate. The purpose was not to advance the state of the art but to build up a Malaysian supplier base, train a workforce, and establish that the country could assemble cars to an export standard. Local content rose steadily through the model's life, and cars were shipped to the United Kingdom and elsewhere, where they competed on price alone.

Protective tariffs on imports gave Proton a domestic market that had few alternatives, and the Saga became ubiquitous in Malaysia in a way few models achieve anywhere. The original design ran, with revisions, until 2008, an extraordinarily long production life; the nameplate was then revived on new cars and remains in production. Assembly has also been carried out in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The policy behind it remains argued over, and Proton eventually needed Geely's investment to become competitive. But the Saga did what national car projects rarely manage: it actually got built, in volume, for decades.
