Where the X70 proved Proton could sell an SUV again, the X50 proved it could sell one in volume. Launched in September 2020 and built at Tanjung Malim, it is a Malaysian development of the Geely Binyue, sitting a class below the X70 in the subcompact crossover segment where most Malaysian buyers actually shop.

The mechanical package came straight from Geely's alliance with Volvo: a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo, in port-injected form for lower trims and direct-injected for the flagship, driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Jamie Barrett is credited with the design work.

Demand outran the plant almost immediately, and long waiting lists became part of the car's story in Malaysia, helped by aggressive pricing during the pandemic-era sales tax holiday. It also gave Proton a credible export product for Southeast Asian markets. The X50 is not an adventurous car, but it landed exactly where the market was.
