Brand History
The SAIC Motor Story
SAIC Motor, headquartered in Shanghai, traces its origins to state automotive workshops of the 1950s and grew into China's largest automaker for much of the modern era. It pioneered Sino-foreign joint ventures, partnering with Volkswagen in 1984 and General Motors in 1997, and acquired the MG brand and Rover intellectual property after MG Rover's collapse. Its own brands include Roewe, MG, and the Maxus commercial line, alongside a major push into electric vehicles and exports.
