01

Origins

Roewe was the premium badge SAIC assembled from what it bought of MG Rover, and by the middle of the 2010s it needed a genuine volume seller. The RX5 arrived in 2016 as a compact crossover on a front-drive platform, with four-wheel drive reserved for later Max and MG-badged versions, aimed squarely at Chinese buyers trading up out of small saloons. It replaced the Roewe W5, a body-on-frame SUV that had never sold in serious numbers.

Design and engineering

What set it apart in a crowded segment was the software. SAIC developed the car with Alibaba, whose Banma system drove a large portrait touchscreen and tied the vehicle to the mapping, payment and account services Chinese customers already used on their phones. SAIC sold it as an internet car, and for once the slogan described something real: connected navigation, voice control and over-the-air updates were unusual at this price in 2016, and rivals spent the following years catching up rather than arguing.

In production

The RX5 became one of the best-selling SUVs in China and the foundation of Roewe's recovery, spawning the larger RX5 Max, plug-in hybrid variants and an export career as the MG RX5. Its real significance is less mechanical than strategic: it showed that a Chinese manufacturer could compete on cabin technology rather than price alone, and it set the template that almost every domestic brand has followed since.
