Brand History

The Tatra Story

Tatra traces its origins to 1850 in Kopřivnice, Moravia, making it one of the oldest vehicle producers in the world, having begun with carriages before building its first car in 1897. Under engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatra pioneered the backbone chassis, swing axles, and air-cooled rear engines, and its streamlined T77 of 1934 was among the first aerodynamically designed production cars, influencing the Volkswagen Beetle. Passenger car production, including the rear-engined V8 T603 and T613 favored by communist-era officials, ended in 1999.
