Origins

In a state socialist economy the top of the market is not a market at all. The Tatra 603, introduced in 1956, was built to carry ministers, party functionaries and visiting dignitaries, and was allocated rather than sold. Ordinary Czechoslovaks could not buy one at any price, which made it an unusually visible symbol of who was who.

Design and engineering

It kept the company's principles intact: a backbone chassis, an air-cooled V8 hung behind the rear axle, and a smooth aerodynamic body with a fastback tail. The first cars had a distinctive nose with three headlamps behind a single glass cover, later revised to four lamps in the 2-603. Build was largely by hand, in small numbers, at Kopřivnice and later Přibor.

In production

The 603 also raced, in a manner of speaking. Lightweight, modified versions competed in long-distance and rally events, which gave the engineers a reason to develop the chassis beyond what a ministerial saloon required. Overhauled cars were routinely returned to the factory to be rebuilt and reissued, which is why examples exist with mismatched specifications and several official service lives.

Legacy

Production ran to 1975, by which time the 613 had already replaced it with a very different, Italian-styled body.
