Brand History
The Tesla Story
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated Tesla Motors on July 1, 2003. Ian Wright, Elon Musk and J. B. Straubel joined the early founding team; Musk led the first major funding round in 2004 and later became chief executive. The Lotus-based Roadster entered customer production in 2008, followed by the Model S in 2012, Model X in 2015, Model 3 in 2017, Model Y in 2020 and Cybertruck in 2023. Tesla also developed its Supercharger network, battery factories and stationary energy-storage business. The corporate name changed from Tesla Motors, Inc. to Tesla, Inc. in February 2017 to reflect a scope extending beyond cars.

2004–2007
Tesla's early identity placed the stylized T inside a shield and paired it with the TESLA MOTORS wordmark. The shield appeared prominently during development of the first Roadster.
2007–present
Tesla removed the enclosing shield and retained the standalone T with its angular TESLA wordmark. Elon Musk explained in 2017 that the T represents a section of an electric motor, with part of a rotor and stator forming the shape.

Current Lineup
Tesla's current new-car range centers on the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck. Model S and Model X production ended in 2026 after limited Signature Editions, although inventory and used vehicles may remain available. Tesla also builds the Semi in limited volume, develops the Cybercab for its Robotaxi service, operates charging infrastructure and sells Powerwall, Megapack and solar-energy products. Product availability varies by country, and Tesla describes Full Self-Driving as supervised where offered rather than fully autonomous personal driving.
Sales
Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles worldwide in 2025: 1,585,279 Model 3 or Model Y vehicles and 50,850 other models.
