Tesla showed the Semi in 2017 with a central driving position, a low, aerodynamically shaped tractor unit and claims about range and operating cost that the road haulage industry treated with scepticism. Production began in 2022 at Gigafactory Nevada, initially at very low volume, with early units going to PepsiCo for real-world use.

The case for electrifying heavy trucks is mostly about running costs and duty cycles rather than emissions optics: a tractor that covers a predictable regional route and returns to base each night is a better fit for batteries than a long-haul unit crossing a continent. The obstacles are the weight of the pack, which eats into payload, and the charging infrastructure, which for a Class 8 truck means power levels that do not currently exist at most freight depots.
