Johnson's taste in cars ran to practical jokes. At his Texas ranch he kept an Amphicar, an amphibious German-built convertible, and would drive unsuspecting guests down a slope toward a lake while shouting that the brakes had failed — before the car floated. The story is recorded by several of the people it was played on.
