01

Origins

The Envision shows where Buick's centre of gravity actually sits. The brand sells far more cars in China than in the United States, and this compact crossover was developed principally for that market, launched there in 2014 and assembled by the SAIC-GM joint venture at Yantai.

Design and engineering

General Motors then took the unusual step of importing it to North America for the 2016 model year rather than building a version domestically — the first Chinese-built vehicle sold in volume by a Detroit manufacturer. That decision drew objections from the United Auto Workers and became politically awkward when tariffs on Chinese imports arrived, forcing GM to seek exemptions and absorb costs.

The car itself is unremarkable in the way its class demands: front-engined, front- or all-wheel drive, five doors, turbocharged four-cylinder engines and a quiet cabin. The second generation, launched for 2021, was notably better looking and better finished than it needed to be. It sells steadily, and its main significance is as evidence of who Buick is really building for.
