Origins

The Eldorado began in 1953 as a deliberately impractical gesture: a limited-run convertible built on the Series 62, with a wraparound windscreen, a cut-down beltline and a metal boot cover over the folded roof. Just over five hundred were built, at roughly double the price of a standard Cadillac convertible, and one carried Dwight Eisenhower down Pennsylvania Avenue at his inauguration that January. It existed to be photographed, and it worked.

Design and engineering

Through the 1950s the name spread across a hardtop coupe, a sedan and the extraordinary hand-finished Eldorado Brougham. The decisive change came in 1967, when the Eldorado was reinvented as a personal luxury coupe with front-wheel drive, sharing its unusual layout with the Oldsmobile Toronado: a longitudinally mounted V8 with a chain-driven automatic transaxle beside it. It gave the car a flat floor, a taut and slightly severe body, and no direct rival. By 1970 it carried a 500-cubic-inch V8, the largest engine fitted to a postwar American passenger car.

In production

Then the ground shifted. The 1976 Eldorado convertible was marketed as the last American ragtop, a claim that proved premature but sold every car. Fuel prices, emissions rules and corporate cost-cutting pushed the Eldorado through two rounds of downsizing, and the models of the early 1980s were undermined by two of General Motors' least successful engines, the cylinder-deactivating V8-6-4 and the aluminium-block HT4100. A further, deeper shrink for 1986 left the car looking indistinguishable from cheaper GM coupes and sales collapsed.

Legacy

A larger, better-resolved Eldorado arrived in 1992 and ran, with the Northstar V8, until 2002, when Cadillac killed the two-door entirely. Nothing replaced it directly for years; the CTS coupe eventually took the slot, without the theatre.
