Origins

Cadillac began with a collapse. Henry Ford's second company, the Henry Ford Company, fell apart in 1902 when he walked out after arguments with his backers. Those backers called in Henry Leland, a machinist who ran a precision engine works and had spent his career in the exacting world of firearms and machine tools, expecting him to value the assets for liquidation. Leland instead showed up with a single-cylinder engine of his own and told them to build cars.

Design and engineering

The result, named after the French officer who founded Detroit, was shown at the New York Automobile Show in January 1903 and taken so well that the company reportedly stopped accepting orders. The Runabout and the Tonneau — the same light car with two seats or with a detachable rear passenger compartment — used a horizontal single-cylinder engine and a planetary transmission, and were mechanically similar to what Ford had been developing.

In production

What set them apart was how they were made. Leland brought interchangeability to car manufacturing at a time when parts were routinely filed to fit, and in 1908 Cadillac demonstrated it by having three cars dismantled in London, the parts scrambled, and three running cars reassembled from the pile. That test won the Dewar Trophy and the slogan Standard of the World.
