Origins

By 1966 Daimler was six years into Jaguar ownership and the engineering independence was gone. The Sovereign was the outcome: a Jaguar 420 with a fluted radiator shroud, a different grille, richer trim and a Daimler badge, replacing the Majestic and Majestic Major at the top of the range.

Design and engineering

When the XJ6 arrived the name moved with it, and Daimler Sovereign became the label for the plusher version of Jaguar's saloon for the next fifteen years, offered with the straight-six and, as the Double Six, with the V12. Transmission choices ran to overdrive manual or automatic, though almost every buyer took the latter.

In production

It was badge engineering, and nobody pretended otherwise, but it worked commercially: buyers who wanted a Jaguar without the Jaguar connotations paid a premium for the fluting. The name later migrated to Jaguar itself as a trim level, which is how a marque quietly disappears.
