Origins
Elfin's 620-series Formula Fords of the early 1970s, including the 622 and 623 developments, industrialised the marque's teaching role: simple, robust single-seaters for the category that became Australian racing's universal apprenticeship, built in numbers that made Elfin the local grid's default choice. Cooper's designs balanced forgiveness with pace, and alumni of these cars populated touring-car and international fields for decades — the 620-series' true results tally. Restored examples now anchor historic Formula Ford racing across Australia, often campaigned by families who bought them new. Amid Elfin's glamorous sports-racers and F5000 machinery, the humble Fords represent the deeper contribution: national racing infrastructure, delivered as a product, one affordable chassis at a time. Their survival rate speaks for the build quality: Cooper's customers raced hard, crashed often, and the cars kept coming back.
