Genesis needed a car at the top before it could sell anything below it, and the G90 was it: the replacement for the Hyundai Equus, launched in 2015 as the model that established the marque as separate from Hyundai. A full-size rear- or all-wheel-drive saloon, it was pitched against the German flagships on refinement and equipment rather than on badge history it did not have.

Its most interesting move came with the 2018 facelift and the 2022 redesign, both of which stopped trying to look German. The wide crest grille, the two-line lighting signature running the width of the car, and an interior built around Korean craft references gave Genesis a visual identity it could then apply downwards through the range.

Built in South Korea and sold in a limited set of markets, the G90 has never been a volume product. It is not meant to be; it exists so that the G70 and the GV80 have something to point at.
