Origins

Holden Special Vehicles built its name on thundering Commodores, and the Grange, from 1996, applied the treatment to the long-wheelbase Caprice: Australia's executive flagship given HSV's V8 tuning — eventually the 6.2-litre LS3 — with suspension, brakes and cabin upgrades that produced a genuinely strange and beloved thing, a boardroom limousine that could hunt sports saloons. Prime ministerial fleets and wealthy pastoralists bought it in small, loyal numbers through two decades of Commodore generations. When Australian manufacturing ended in 2017, the Grange died with the platform, closing a category no other country quite had: the muscle limousine, built by racers, for a nation whose distances made 300 kilowatts seem like common sense.
