Origins

Few vehicles have stayed in the catalogue this long. Isuzu launched the Elf in 1959 as a light cab-over truck for a Japan that was rebuilding its distribution network, and it has been in continuous production ever since, through successive generations and under a dozen different names.

Design and engineering

The formula barely changed: cab over the front axle for maximum load length in minimum overall length, a flat frame that any body builder can work with, and diesel engines chosen for longevity rather than refinement. Outside Japan it is sold as the N-Series, and it has worn Chevrolet and GMC badges in North America, where Isuzu's commercial arm long outlived its passenger-car business.

In production

The Elf's importance is cumulative rather than dramatic. It carries parcels in Bangkok, produce in Osaka and building materials in Manila; it is assembled, or has been, in the Philippines, Colombia, China, Russia and elsewhere. Recent generations have added automated manual transmissions, a smaller RZ4E turbo-diesel and a battery-electric version — an unusually consequential change for a vehicle whose customers measure success in decades of service rather than in model years.
