Origins

The Elan of 1962 was the car that made Lotus a manufacturer rather than a kit supplier. Its central idea was structural: a steel backbone chassis, splitting into a fork at each end to carry the suspension and drivetrain, with an unstressed fibreglass body dropped over it. That gave torsional stiffness at very low weight, and the whole car came in comfortably under half a tonne.

Design and engineering

Around that went four-wheel independent suspension with Chapman struts at the rear, rack and pinion steering, disc brakes all round, and the Lotus twin-cam, a Ford block with a Harry Mundy-designed twin-overhead-camshaft head. Pop-up headlamps operated by engine vacuum kept the nose clean and became notorious for drooping when the system leaked, which it did.

In production

The result had a ride and steering combination that road testers struggled to explain, since it was both compliant and precise, and it set a standard others measured themselves against for decades. Mazda's engineers benchmarked an Elan while developing the MX-5 and have never been coy about it. A longer +2 version added two small rear seats and made the car marginally practical.

Legacy

The name returned in 1989 on the M100, a very different proposition: front-wheel drive, an Isuzu turbocharged engine, and General Motors money behind it. It handled superbly and sold badly, arriving into a recession, and the tooling eventually went to Kia. The Elise, in 1996, took over the job the original Elan had done.
